永遠緬懷
我們懷著深深的敬意與不捨，悼念 刁錦寰院士 的辭世。刁院士是國際統計學界的重要領袖，在時間序列分析、貝葉斯統計與環境統計等領域貢獻卓著，開創多項關鍵方法，對統計理論與實務發展影響深遠。他也長期致力於將統計應用於環境與公共政策議題，展現統計科學在服務社會中的重要角色。更創立泛華統計協會與《中華統計學誌》，他的學術成就與理念，深刻影響了現代統計科學的發展。
身為中央研究院院士，刁院士對臺灣統計學界同樣有重要貢獻。他不僅推動中研院統計所的成立，給予學術上的諮詢與指導，也以親切謙和的態度與長遠的眼光，啟發並培育了許多後進。
刁院士的辭世，是全球統計學界的重大損失。然而，他所建立的學術基礎與精神，將持續影響未來世代；他的學術風範與為人典範，也將長留於學界與所有受他啟發的人心中。
In Memoriam
We express our deepest respect and heartfelt sorrow at the passing of Academician George C. Tiao. Professor Tiao was a leading figure in the global statistical community, making outstanding contributions to time series analysis, Bayesian statistics, and environmental statistics. He pioneered many influential methods that have had a lasting impact on both statistical theory and practice. He was also deeply committed to applying statistics to environmental and public policy issues, demonstrating the vital role of statistics in serving society. In addition, he founded the International Chinese Statistical Association and Statistica Sinica, and his scholarly achievements and vision have profoundly shaped the development of modern statistical science.
As an Academician of Academia Sinica, Professor Tiao made significant contributions to the statistical community in Taiwan. He played an important role in establishing the Institute of Statistical Science at Academia Sinica, providing academic guidance and leadership. Known for his humility, kindness, and long-term vision, he inspired and mentored many generations of scholars.
His passing is a great loss to the global statistical community. Yet, the foundations he built and the spirit he embodied will continue to influence future generations. His academic legacy and personal example will remain in the hearts of colleagues, students, and all who were inspired by him.
George decided to join Barbara in heaven on April 25, 2026. With the decision, the statistical profession has lost a giant and the International Chinese Statistical Association has lost its founding father. I have lost an outstanding mentor, a wonderful colleague and a dear friend. I still cannot believe that George already left us as we still need his wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. He had provided so much to so many statisticians and had set a role model for us. He had touched many statisticians around the world, especially for younger generations from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Singapore. For those in Bayesian inference, time series analysis, environmental statistics, and business statistics, George's contributions will be treasured forever. His articles and books are always excellent references. RIP George. We miss you always.
