The First Eastern Taiwan Statistical Conference will be held

at the National Dong-Hwa University (NDHU), July 4-5, 1997. The

Department of Applied Mathematics, NDHU will host the conference.

Topics in schedule will include Applied Probability, Biostatistics,

Mathematical Statistics, etc. which consist of about twenty

lectures.

The National Dong-Hwa University was founded in 1994, starting

with five graduate departments, among which the Department of Applied

Mathematics was the first one of the present College of Science

and Engineering. The main academic program of the department is

Statistics, which will be supplemented with some programs in

applied mathematics; and a Ph.D. program has been planned under

development. Currently, there are three colleges with thirteen

departments, and about five hundred students.

The campus is located 10 miles (20 minutes) south of the Hualien

city, or 20 miles south of the Taroko Gorge, world-wide known for its

spectacular and unique geological scenery. The site of the campus is

also the starting point (by the Pacific Ocean) of the scenic Hua-Dong

Valley, that extends southbound 100 miles along the highway 9 and ends

at the Ken-Ting National Park. An ideal place for artists, philosophers,

and scholars in all areas.
