The Sixth Southern Taiwan Statistical Conference will be held
July 11-12, 1997 at the National Cheng-kung University (NCKU),
Tainan, Taiwan, Republic of China. The Sixth Southern Taiwan
Statistical Conference is organized and will be hosted by Department
of Statistics, National Cheng-kung University. Tentative topics in
the format of concurrent sessions includes Industrial Statistics,
Mathematical Statistics, Biostatistics, Environmental Statistics,
and Statistical Consultation.
The National Cheng-kung University is one of the leading
research-oriented comprehensive and oldest universities in Taiwan
which consists of 5 colleges: College of Literature, College of
Science, College of Engineering, College of Management, and College
of Medicine. The Department of Statistics is one of five departments
in the College of Management Science. The NCKU is located in the
downtown of the city of Tainan and is within 5-minute walking
distance from train station.
The city of Tainan, located approximately 325 kilomiles south of
Taipei, is the oldest city and the cultural center of Taiwan. Tainan
is convenient to be reached by bus, train, or air. The traveling
time for bus and train is approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes from
Taipei. The flying time from Taipei is around 40 minutes. The
weather in Tainan in early July is hot and humid. The average
temperature in July is about 30 C and
relative humidity can reach as high as 90%.
There are many attractions and excellent food in Tainan,
including Chihkan Tower, built in 1653 A.D.; Grand Matsu Temple,
built in 1683 A.D.; KaiYuan Temple, built 1680 A.D.; Confucius
Temple, built in 1665 A.D.; Koxinga's Shrine, built, 1662 A.D.;
Temple Worship; found in 1570 A.D.; Chung-Shan Park; Gran South Gate,
built in 1736 A.D.; Fahua Temple, built in 1683 A.D.; Five
Concubines Temple, built in 1746 A.D.; Chushih Temple, built in 1683
A.D.; City Cultural Center; Aping Harbor, found in 1624 A.D.; Grand
East Gate, built in 1736 A.D.; Ssuchao Civilian Temple, built in
1700 A.D.; Luh Erh Men Matsu Temple, built in 1661 A.D.; Tu Chen
Matsu Temple, built in 1661 A.D.; Hsiao Pei Snack town. Many of
these attractions have been designated as national first class
historical sites and can be reached within 45 minutes of driving
distance. One day tour of these historical sites and attractions are
available. In addition, Kenting National Park, located at the
southern tip of the island, is just about 90-minute bus ride from
Tainan.
