  • Don Ylvisaker is Emeritus Professor at UCLA.  He has been the Consulting Editor for Statistica Sinica since 1997.  His career path has gone through a Masters Degree in Mathematics at the University of Nebraska, a Ph.D. in Statistics at Stanford University, teaching at Columbia University, New York University, and the University of Washington prior to moving to UCLA.  There he was Director of the new Division of Statistics in the Mathematics Department until his early retirement in 1994. On recall, he was instrumental in the formation of the University's Statistics Department in 1998.
  • His early research interests were in probability, Gaussian processes, and mathematical statistics, design and robustness issues.  These interests moved toward more applied statistics in mid-career, and he was heavily involved in the statistical controversies of the 1980’s and 1990’s over the statistical adjustment of the U. S. census and in the forensic use of blood tests and the early use of DNA evidence.   Applied interests ensued in legal and lottery consulting, and with the counting of the homeless in various jurisdictions, often with responsibilities for sample design and the like.
  • He has been on various editorial boards and active in committee work for professional societies. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association.
