Samuel Kou

Professor, Harvard University
Abstract Talk title: Learning from big medical data: statistical analysis on electronic health data
Personal Website Samuel Kou is Professor of Statistics at Harvard University. He received a bachelor's degree in computational mathematics from Peking University in 1997, followed by a Ph.D. in statistics from Stanford University in 2001. After completing his Ph.D., he joined Harvard University as an Assistant Professor of Statistics, and was promoted to a full professor in 2008. His research interests include big data analytics; digital disease tracking; stochastic inference in biophysics, chemistry and biology; protein folding; Bayesian inference for stochastic models; nonparametric statistical methods; model selection and empirical Bayes methods; and Monte Carlo methods. He is the recipient of the COPSS (Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies) Presidents' Award, the highest honor for a statistician under the age of 41; the Guggenheim Fellowship; a US National Science Foundation CAREER Award; the Institute of Mathematical Statistics Richard Tweedie Award; the Raymond J. Carroll Young Investigator Award; and the American Statistical Association Outstanding Statistical Application Award. He is an elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and an elected Fellow and a Medallion Lecturer of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

Helen MacGillivray

President, International Statistical Institute
Abstract Talk title: Statistics learning for the next decade
Personal Website Helen MacGillivray is only the second female, and second Australian, to be President of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) in its 130 year history. She was an inaugural Australian Senior Learning and Teaching Fellow, first female President and first female Honorary Life Member of the Statistical Society of Australia. She is Editor of Teaching Statistics, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Chair of the newly established UN Global Network of Institutions for Statistical Training, and a past President of the International Association for Statistical Education. Her work in teaching and curricula design across multiple disciplines, class sizes and educational levels received recognition and support through national awards and significant grants. She has published textbooks, book chapters, keynote, invited or refereed papers on authentic learning and assessment in statistics, quantitative learning support and statistical research interests in distributional properties. She is joint chair and editor of the Australian Conference on Teaching Statistics, and has been a member of the organising or editorial committees for many international and national conferences. Helen has chaired reviews of university departments and centres across Australia and internationally, and has worked as a consultant on teaching statistics in Australia and the UK. Her leadership roles over many years include founding and directing university-wide Maths Access Centres, Symposia in Statistical Thinking, and mentored developmental programs in university teaching and communication of statistics. Helen has played key roles in mathematics and statistics school education on curriculum, resources and assessment moderation. She has given more than 100 professional development workshops for teachers, and a variety of successful extension and enrichment programs for thousands of high school students.

Yen-Tsung Huang

Associate Research Fellow, Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica
Abstract Talk title: Causal mediation analysis: from univariate to multivariate mediators
Personal Website Yen-Tsung Huang is an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica, and joint Associate Professor of National Taiwan University (Department of Mathematics, Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Program of Genome and Systems Biology). He was originally trained in medicine and received an MD degree from National Taiwan University in 2003. He then pursued graduate studies at Harvard University, where he received MPH in quantitative methods (2006), MS in biostatistics (2009) and dual ScD in epidemiology and biostatistics (2012). After completing his doctorate, he joined Brown University as an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He went back to join Academia Sinica in 2016. His research interests span methodology and empirical research. His methodology research includes causal mediation model, causal inference, integrative genomics, statistical genetics, and survival analysis. His empirical work covers cancer genomics, cancer and molecular epidemiology, cardiometabolic disorders, viral hepatitis, and reproductive medicine. He has received Li Foundation Prize for Excellence in Creativity (2017), Talent Recruitment Award Fund of Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan (2016), Junior Research Awards in Genetics/Molecular Population Studies (2015) and Salomon Faculty Research Award (2013) at Brown University, and David P. Byar Young Investigator Travel Award of American Statistical Association (2012).
